Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (September 15, 2007) – The Saint Leo University men’s soccer team (2-2-2, 0-1 SSC) was edged 3-2 by No. 9 Nova Southeastern University (7-0, 1-0 SSC) in both teams’ Sunshine State Conference opener on Saturday night at the NSU Soccer Complex in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Saint Leo freshman striker Jonathan Glenn (Maloney Gardens, Trinidad & Tobago) scored twice for the Lions, but NSU striker Ally Hassan scored his second goal of the match in the 97th minute to give the Sharks the win.

The Lions opened the scoring in the match in the 23rd minute, as Glenn took a looping ball from Eusebio Montoya (Jr., Smithfield, N.C.) and slotted beyond the reach of NSU goalkeeper Jarod Rennick for his second goal of the season.  Saint Leo led 1-0 at the half, as Rennick made several saves and one Lion effort was cleared off the line.

NSU pulled even in the 70th minute when a shot from midfielder Craig Heenighan was spilled by Saint Leo ‘keeper Sam Luedke (Sr., Deltona, Fla.) and Hassan pounced for his first goal of the evening.

In the 87th minute, the Sharks earned their first lead of the match when a driving run from midfielder Romain Onteniente eventually led to a strike that found the back of the net for a 2-1 NSU lead.  The lead did not last long, as just 29 seconds later, the Lions equalized with Glenn firing a shot beyond the reach of Rennick.

In extra time, Hassan took a pass from defender Chris Sarabia and hit a curling effort that settled in the right corner for the game winner.

Saint Leo will return home for its next match, as the Lions will host Rollins College in another Sunshine State Conference match on Friday, September 21 at 7:00 p.m.
