Lantana, Fla. (September 7, 2006) – The Saint Leo University men’s soccer team (3-2) erased a pair of one-goal deficits, scored five second half goals and received a hat trick by senior forward Asmir Pervan (Simmern, Germany) to defeat Palm Beach Atlantic University 5-2 on Thursday night at Lantana Park.
Pervan also added an assist to total seven points in the match, while sophomore midfielder Eusebio Montoya (Smithfield, N.C.) scored a goal and had an assist of his own during the second half outburst.
The Lions fell behind in the 35th minute and trailed 1-0 heading into the locker room. Pervan equalized with his first goal of the night in the 52nd minute, but PBA regained its lead just seven minutes later.
Pervan was again able to pull the sides level in the 79th minute before SLU junior defender Josh McKenna (Jr., Lecanto, Fla.) rose to head home a Luis Quintero (Jr., Cape Coral, Fla.) corner in the 83rd minute for his first career goal and the eventual game-winning strike.
Saint Leo then added a pair of goals in the final two minutes to cement the win and end a brief two-match losing streak. Montoya scored his second goal of the season when he broke in one-on-one with PBA goalkeeper Joseph Yurchak courtesy of a pass from Pervan and finished for a two-goal lead in the 88th minute.
The stage was then set for Pervan to secure his hat trick, which he finished in the 90th minute firing into an empty net for his fifth goal in just three games. The senior striker has now scored a goal in each of his first three matches in 2006.
The Lions will travel to Montevallo, Ala. for a crucial South Region showdown against the University of Montevallo this Sunday. Opening kick-off for the match, which will feature the sides tied for seventh in this week’s NSCAA/adidas South Region Poll, is set for 2:30 p.m. ET.
