Pensacola, Fla. (September 3, 2006) – The Saint Leo University men’s soccer team (2-2) was edged 2-1 in overtime by the University of West Florida (3-1) on Sunday afternoon in Pensacola, Fla.
For the second consecutive match, the Lions got an equalizer from senior forward Asmir Pervan (Simmern, Germany) but were unable to find a winner in the closing stages.Instead, UWF substitute Patrick McLean found the back of the net with a header in the 99th minute to send SLU to its second consecutive overtime defeat.
The Argonauts had opened the scoring in the 11th minute of the match when Jimmy McHenry scored his second goal of the 2006 campaign.
Pervan equalized in the 41st minute, as his deflected shot found the back of the net for his second goal in as many appearances.Brandon Whitsett (Jr., Palm Harbor, Fla.) was credited with an assist on the goal.
Neither side could find the go-ahead goal in the final 49 minutes of regulation, and went to extra time deadlocked at 1-1.McLean’s strike came just under two minutes before the conclusion of the first overtime period.
The Lions will continue a stretch of three straight road matches on Thursday, September 7 when they travel to Palm Beach, Fla. to face Palm BeachAtlanticUniversity.The south region match will kick off at 6:00 p.m.
