Saint Leo, Fla. (August 27, 2006) – The Saint Leo University men's soccer team (2-0) battled to a 2-1 win over the visiting Thomas University Night Hawks (0-1) on Sunday at University Field.
Luis Quintero (Jr., Cape Coral, Fla.) and Tommy Poston (Sr., Birmingham, England) scored first half goals, and a late goal from TU was not enough as the Lions improved to 2-0.
For the second match in a row, Saint Leo scored early with Quintero opening the scoring with his third goal of the season in the 13th minute. The junior worked for space at the edge of the area before unleashing a shot that found the bottom right corner.
Poston then converted the third penalty of the young season for the Lions, as he stepped to the spot in the 23rd minute and sent the ‘keeper the wrong way for a 2-0 SLU advantage.
SLU's Eusebio Montoya (So., Smithfield, N.C.) nearly added to the lead in the 72nd minute. However, the striker's first effort was saved bravely by Thomas substitute goalkeeper Andrew Madero and his second shot was cleared off the line by a Night Hawk defender.
With just over a minute remaining in the contest Thomas was awarded a penalty, which was converted by Wylie Clarke. The Lions then saw out the final minute to pick up their second win of the young campaign.
SLU will return to action on Friday, September 1 when the Lions will host Bethel College at 7:00 p.m.
