Saint Leo, Fla. (October 13, 2006) – Asmir Pervan (Sr., Simmern, Germany) scored the only goal of the game in the 55th minute to give the Saint Leo University men’s soccer team (10-4-1, 4-1-1 SSC) a 1-0 win over Eckerd College (5-6-1, 2-4) on Friday night in a Sunshine State Conference match played at University Field.

Pervan’s team-leading 12th goal of the season helped the Lions stretch their unbeaten streak to seven matches, including a five-game unbeaten run in conference play.

After a scoreless first half, the game erupted to life in the 55th minute when Saint Leo forward Eusebio Montoya (So., Smithfield, N.C.) was pulled down by Eckerd defender John Fletcher inside the penalty area.  The resulting spot kick from Tommy Poston (Sr., Birmingham, England) was saved brilliantly by Tritons’ goalkeeper Chris Howe to keep the sides level.

However, just 32-seconds later after a long throw-in from Corey Ahern (Sr., Seminole, Fla.), Pervan found the back of the net.  A scramble in the penalty area saw the ball bounce free to Pervan who let loose a shot that was again saved by Howe.  The rebound fell to the Lions’ striker who made no mistake with his second effort, firing across the face of goal and into the left corner for the eventual winning goal.

The Saint Leo back four of Matt Green (Jr., Coconut Creek, Fla.), Josh McKenna (Jr., Lecanto, Fla.), Juan Chavez (So., Sarasota, Fla.) and Ryo Tsuda (Sr., Komaki, Japan) helped limit Eckerd to just one shot on target and four shots overall in the match, as the Lions posted their second shutout in a row.

Saint Leo will play its final road game of the regular season when it travels to Lakeland, Fla. to face Florida Southern College in another SSC clash next Wednesday.  The game will kick off at 7:00 p.m. and will be broadcast live on the Internet via the Saint Leo Athletics Audiocast Network.
