Bye tabbed SSC Men’s Lax Defensive Player of the Week

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo junior Jake Bye was named the Sunshine State Conference Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, after a lock-down defensive effort and a pair of goals at the offensive end in the Lions' 13-8 triumph over Florida Tech on Saturday.

The junior defender from Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada, charted a season-high five ground balls and one caused turnover in the win over the 19th-ranked Panthers, while helping the Lions go 22-of-25 on clear attempts. He was part of a Saint Leo defensive unit that held Florida Tech to just 2-of-7 on man-up opportunities.

At the attacking end of the field, Bye registered a career-high two goals versus the Panthers, the most of any Saint Leo defender in a game this season.

Bye's first goal came unassisted with 12:17 remaining in the second quarter, after scooping up a ground ball and carrying it over the restraining line to complete the clear. No Florida Tech defender stepped up to challenge Bye as he moved into the Panther end of the turf, and his ensuing shot found the back of the net for his second goal of the season to extend Saint Leo's lead to 5-3.

His second marker was Saint Leo's final goal of the day, with 2:39 showing on the game clock. Bye snagged a Florida Tech pass out of the air, and again advanced unchallenged to the Panthers' cage before shooting for his third goal of the season.

The Defensive Player of the Week accolade is the first of Bye's career at Saint Leo. Bye also becomes the first non-goalie to earn SSC Defensive Player of the Week honors this season.

Saint Leo men's lacrosse returns to action on Saturday, April 15, when it travels to Boca Raton, Fla., to face Lynn University in a 1:00 p.m. SSC matchup.
