Pauwels, Tatarian earn SSC Weekly honors

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's lacrosse team saw junior Kyle Pauwels and sophomore Thomas Tatarian earn Sunshine State Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors, respectively, following an upset win over the No. 7 LIU Post Pioneers.

Saint Leo junior Kyle Pauwels was perfect in his first game for the Green & Gold as he tallied four points in Saint Leo's upset victory Friday evening. He scored four goals on four shots for 100-percent accuracy. The Kamloops, British Columbia native tallied his first two goals to give the Lions a 3-1 lead in the first quarter before LIU Post would answer with 5 unanswered. Pauwels' third and fourth goals were back-to-back, within 10 seconds of each other, in the fourth quarter to bring the score even at 10 before the Lions would eventually take the lead and go on to take down No. 7 LIU Post to open the season.

Lions' sophomore Thomas Tatarian has spent the last two seasons, freshman & red-shirt freshman years, playing back-up to Saint Leo's all-time career wins record holder in graduate Dave Moore. On Friday evening, Tatarian made his first career start and earned his first career win in net as the Saint Leo Lions upset No. 7 LIU Post, 14-11. Tatarian, who surely had nerves in the first half as anyone would expect, turned it after the break, only allowing only two goals in the second half of action. He made some crucial saves down the stretch as the Lions mounted their comeback after trailing for the first three quarters. Tatarian finished his first career start with 14 save on 25 shots on goal, and 39 total shots.

These are the first awards of their careers, and the first conference awards for the Lions this season.

Saint Leo hosts Chowan on Saturday, Feb. 11 in a 1 p.m. game.
