SAINT LEO, FLA. – A 14-game regular season schedule awaits the 2014 Saint Leo University men's lacrosse team, as head coach Brad Jorgensen and the Lions mark their first season as member of the Sunshine State Conference.
Jorgensen, who enters his ninth year at the helm of the Lions' squad, reached his 100th career victory last season against 2013 Deep South Conference champions, Catawba College. After falling short in the DSC semi-finals to the University of Tampa, the Lions look to advance in the all-new Sunshine State Conference, which includes Saint Leo University, Florida Southern College, Florida Tech, Rollins College, the University of Tampa, and first year program Lynn University.
"We are excited about our 2014 competition, having kept our strength of schedule high and playing exclusively Southern Region opponents," said Jorgensen. "Our inaugural year of Sunshine State Conference play will be challenging, and we have managed to keep old Deep South rivals on the docket as well. We have our work cut out for us, and we wouldn't want it any other way."
With seven home contests and seven road games on their schedule, the Lions will compete in five SSC matchups with nine non-conference opponents. The Green and Gold will face two teams who have been selected to the Top-10 United State Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division II Coaches Poll, including Limestone College, a two-time NCAA Division II National Championship winner.
Kicking off their 2014 regular season on the road, the Lions will take on Shorter College in Rome, Ga. on Saturday, Feb. 14. Just two days later, the Lions will face Limestone College, who lost in the 2013 NCAA Division II semifinal to Mercyhurst University.
Following the two away matches to jumpstart the season, Saint Leo will host their home opener on Saturday, Feb. 22 against the Lindenwood Lions, a first year program from Missouri. Four days later, Saint Leo will travel north to face the defending DSC champions, Catawba.
To begin March, the Lions will host Wheeling Jesuit on Wednesday, Mar. 5, and Notre Dame De Namur just three days later at University Turf Field.
On Mar. 14, Saint Leo will compete in their first-ever Sunshine State Conference matchup when they travel to Melbourne, Fla. to battle the Florida Tech Panthers. The Lions will then head to Mount Olive College (Mar. 18) before taking on Lynn University at home in their second SSC contest of the year (Mar. 22).
Shortly after, Saint Leo will play their last home game during the month of March when they take on MIT in a non-conference game on Mar. 25. The Lions will then head across town to the University of Tampa for their final March contest on the 29th.
To kick off April action, Saint Leo will take on the Florida Southern Mocs in Lakeland, Fla. on Saturday, Apr. 5. Upon the Lions' return home, they will face Pfeiffer (Apr. 12) before hosting Rollins College in their final regular season Sunshine State Conference match-up on Apr. 15.
With the 2014 regular season drawing to a close, the Sunshine State Conference men's lacrosse semifinal games will take place on Apr. 19, and the two winners will advance to the Conference Championship match on Apr. 26. Locations are still to be determined.
