Jorgensen Announces Four Additions to 2014 Roster
SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo men's lacrosse head coach Brad Jorgensen has announced the addition of four early signees to the 2014 roster. Defenders Nick Buckley and Mike Kavanagh, and midfielders Jake Kavanagh and Greg Strobl, will join the Green and Gold next season.
"I am very happy with this incoming group," said Jorgensen. "This group is full of potential, and will improve our team on many different levels. We have very high expectations for this class, and I am confident they will make an impact from the start."
With a solid mix of size, speed, and skills, the new signees hail from the Sunshine State, as well as New York.
6-2 | 215 | Defender
Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
Ponte Vedra High School
Buckley plays for Ponte Vedra High School under Head Coach Tom West. The 6-2 defender has helped his team to back-to-back state final-four appearances (2011-2012), and back-to-back District and Regional Championships. In 2012, he was named North Florida First Team Preseason All-American. The Ponte Vedra Beach native has been selected as a member of Team Florida, as well as the Ponte Vedra Possums, and was a member of the first lacrosse team from Florida to win the Battle of the Hotbeds National Tournament held at the University of Delaware. Buckley chose Saint Leo because it offers him the unique opportunity to learn and grow as a student-athlete within a Catholic institution.
Coach Jorgensen's Thoughts: "Nick is an athletic defender with a great lacrosse IQ. He comes from one of the best high school programs in the state, and has proven himself on the national level this summer."
5-11 | 175 | Midfielder
Shoreham Wading River High School
A native of Shoreham, N.Y., Kavanagh played a role in helping the Shoreham Wading River High School Wildcats to a State Championship victory in 2012. The 5-11 middie chose Saint Leo because of the academics, lacrosse program, and Florida weather. His cousin, Mike, has also signed on to play with the Lions beginning in 2014.
Coach Jorgensen's Thoughts: "Jake is a perfect fit with our midfield group. His ability to contribute in multiple roles and compete against high level competition makes him a fantastic pick up."
6-1 | 210 | Defender
Geneva High School
Kavanagh is a four year varsity starter for Smithtown High School East, playing under the direction of Head Coach Jason Lambert. He was named Defensive MVP as the Nike Lacrosse Camp held at the University of Vermont. A member of the Athletes Helping Athletes Club, Kavanagh was also given First Team All-Division Honors for his efforts as a linebacker on the football team, where he racked up 70 tackles and eight sacks in 2012. The Smithtown, N.Y. native chose Saint Leo because of the accounting program, and comfortable atmosphere on campus. His cousin, Jake, has also signed with the Lions to play in 2014.
Coach Jorgensen's Thoughts: "Mike has a Division I frame, and a very high level of toughness. He will bring a physical presence to our defense that reflects our style of play."
5-10 | 160 | Midfielder
Oviedo High School
Sunshine State product Greg Strobl currently plays for Oviedo High School, as well as the Orlando Possums club organization. Playing under the direction of Sean O'Dell at Oviedo, Strobl has earned First Team All-Conference, and All-District honors in 2012. In addition, he was named Midfielder of the Year in 2012, and earned the Coaches Award in 2011. The two-time captain racked up 14 goals, 45 assists, and 92 ground balls in his 2012 campaign. Stobl chose Saint Leo because of Coach Jorgensen's coaching style, the new lacrosse stadium, new residence life halls, and the new, state-of-the-art School of Business building on campus.
Coach Jorgensen's Thoughts: "Greg is a very gifted offensive player who can also lock down and defend on the other end of the field. His skill-sets fit perfectly with the new NCAA playing rules."
