WINGATE, N.C. - Saint Leo University sophomore attackman Matt Obermeyer has been named the Deep South Conference Offensive Player of the Week, league officials announced Monday.
Obermeyer had seven goals and an assist in Saint Leo's two games last week. He started his week with a pair of goals against ninth-ranked Mar Hill. The Winter Springs, Fla. native netted five goals while also handing out an assist in Saint Leo's 13-9 DSC victory at Wingate on Saturday. He also had a ground ball in the Wingate victory.
Tampa junior goalie Joseph Fiorucci is the Defensive Player of the Week, while Florida Southern's Dane Sorenson is the Freshman of the Week.
Fiorucci piled up 25 saves in Tampa's two games last week, which included 18 saves in the win over ninth-ranked Mars Hill. He started his week with seven saves against Colorado Mesa, while allowing seven goals. Fiorucci held Mars Hill to a season-low six goals in Tampa's 7-6 victory, compiling a save percentage of .750 while also collecting five ground balls against the Lions.
Sorenson had seven goals in Florida Southern's two games last week. He had three goals against Queens, which included back-to-back goals in the third period to tie the game at five. Sorenson capped his week with four goals to lead the Moccasins to a 12-5 conference win over Lenoir-Rhyne. He scored Florida Southern's first goal of the game, while scoring three goals in the final period to lead the Moccasins on a game-ending 8-0 run.
The Saint Leo men's lacrosse team returns to action on Tuesday, March 20, in a Deep South Conference showdown against University of Tampa. Faceoff against the Spartans is set for 7 p.m. Fans who cannot make it to the game can catch all of the action live at saintleolions.com.
