WINGATE, N.C. – Saint Leo freshman attackman Matt Obermeyer opened up the 2011 season as he was named the Deep South Conference’s Freshman of the Week it was announced by DSC league officials on Monday afternoon.
Obermeyer had an impressive collegiate debut for 12th-ranked Saint Leo, racking up six goals to lead the Lions to a 21-13 conference victory over Rollins. He took 18 shots on the afternoon, with 13 shots on goal. The Winter Springs, Fla. native also collected at least three ground balls on the day for the Lions.
He was joined in the weekly honors by two Mars Hills players in Tyler Farmer and Dylan Price, who were named Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week respectively.
Starting the season away from University Field, Saint Leo will remain on the road as they will make their first of two trips to North Carolina later this week. The Lions will first travel to Laurinburg, NC as they face St. Andrew’s Presbyterian College on Friday, February 25th. The game is scheduled to get started at 4:00 p.m.
