SAINT LEO, Fla. – After opening their season in impressive fashion on Saturday afternoon, Saint Leo lacrosse players Joe Guerin and Ty Trombley earned Deep South Conference Player of the Week Honors for the period ending February 21st it was announced by the DSC main office in Wingate, NC.

Guerin earned DSC offensive honors after an opening-day performance against Rollins in Winter Park where he tallied a team-high five goals in just shots and also recorded an assist in the Lions’ 14-5 non-conference triumph over Rollins College.  The Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. native was just one of seven different Lions’ who recorded a goal in the victory.

Freshman Ty Trombley, playing in his first game for Saint Leo and following in the footsteps of his cousin Brandon, served as the Lions’ specialist on the face-off in place of the standard Saint Leo starter, who did not dress.  Trombley won 10-of-13 face-off attempts en route to claiming the DSC Freshman of the Week honor.

Catawba sophomore goalkeeper Michael Pecchia rounded out the week’s awards as he was named the Defensive Player of the Week.  Pecchia had a huge game against No. 1 C.W. Post, recording 18 saves and a .667 save percentage as Post edged Catawba 9-5. Pecchia had 11 saves and a .630 save percentage in a 16-8 regional victory over Pfeiffer University.

Saint Leo departs for their longest trip of the 2010 regular season as they will play three games in five days, taking on Deep South opponent Wingate on Wednesday before traveling to Charlotte, NC to face Queens University on Friday and getting back into the DSC with a Sunday game against Catawba.  The No. 9 Lions will face-off against Wingate tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. at Irwin Belk Stadium in Wingate, NC.
