SAINT LEO, Fla. – Despite just four years of experience, the Saint Leo lacrosse team was rewarded for its record-breaking 9-3 season as eight Lions were named as members of the 2009 All-Deep South Conference team, it was announced on Wednesday, April 15.

The Lions, who finished 4-1 in conference play, had four players earn first team honors, and four who earned honorable mention.

Midfielder Kyle Marceau earned the nod in the middle of the field as he ranks fourth in the league with 1.50 assists per game and seventh with 3.42 points per game. Faceoff specialist Mike Del Buono went 109-65 in face-offs on the year while also racking up 42 ground balls for the Lions. Senior defenseman Alec Rahe helped lead a Saint Leo defense that allowed a conference-low 7.39 goals per game, while collecting 32 ground balls on the year. In the cage for the Lions, sophomore David Erdman had a .579 save percentage while averaging10.64 saves per game and a league-best 7.76 goals against per game.

Mars Hill, who went undefeated in conference play and defeated the Green & Gold on an overtime goal, led the way with six first-team selections. In addition, Mars Hill junior attack Danny Farmer was named the Player of the Year and Chris Cudmore was named the Freshman of the Year.  Mars Hill’s Sean Woods was also named Coach of the Year.

For the rest of the Deep South Conference, Wingate University had two selections while Catawba College had one.

The midfield was led by Wingate senior Mark Hodsdon, ranking third in the league in assists per game and sixth in points. Mars Hill senior Brent Hann joins Hodsdon and Marceau in the position. Hann finished the regular season with 13 goals and 13 assists for the Lions.

Joining Del Buono, is Mars Hill senior Kris Frier who also earns an all-conference selection in the specialist category. Frier had two goals and an assist on the year while collecting 37 ground balls.

Led by Rahe and Wingate senior Evan Schaller, the defense on the all-conference team includes Mars Hill’s Cudmore. Schaller anchored the Wingate defense while leading the team with 58 ground balls and collecting a goal and an assist on the year. Cudmore, a four-time Freshman of the Week recipient, racked up 50 ground balls on the year while leading a Mars Hill defense that allowed only 8.95 goals per game, ranking second in the DSC.

Mars Hill senior Nick Sigona joins Erdman as all-conference goalies. Sigona had a .581 save percentage and 11.92 saves per game, while holding opponents to 8.90 goals per game.

The Saint Leo lacrosse team will travel to Wingate, N.C. where they are the No. 2 seed in this year’s Deep South Conference Tournament.  The Lions will face host and No. 3 seed Wingate University on Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.  The game will be carried live on the Saint Leo Lions AudioCast Network.
