SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo lacrosse team is starting to see their success turn into awards as Joseph Anderson and Jake McGuinness were honored with Deep South Conference Player of the Week awards for the week ending March 15.
Anderson, who was named Freshman of the Week, racked up four goals and three assists in the victory over Franklin Pierce on Sunday. He also picked up six ground balls for the Lions during the week. The freshman from Bellman, N.Y. scored his four goals on only seven shots in the 26-2 victory over the Ravens on Sunday.
McGuinness, another freshman for the Green & Gold, was named the conference’s Defensive Player of the Week as he helped anchor the defense for the Lions all week. He racked up seven ground balls in the victory over Queens, while collecting a total of 16 in the three games. The native of Barnstable, Mass. also notched an assist in the 26-goal win over Franklin Pierce, while holding the Ravens to only two goals.
The Lions went 3-0 on the week on their way to a program-best 6-1 start. Saint Leo defeated Queens 10-9 on March 9. On March 12, SLU picked up a 12-8 conference victory over Catawba and the Lions concluded the week with a 26-2 victory over Franklin Pierce on a warm and picturesque Sunday from University Field.
It is another busy week for the Lions as Anderson and McGuinness lead SLU and their six-game win-streak against St. Michael’s College on Wednesday night. Following that is a big regional contest at home against Limestone College on Saturday. Wednesday’s game is scheduled to get underway at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday’s is set for 1:00 p.m. Both will be played at University Field on the Saint Leo campus.
