SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo lacrosse team was able to give its entire roster a nice workout as they took care of visiting Franklin Pierce University (0-2) with a dominating 26-2 win over the Ravens on Sunday afternoon from a warm and sunny University Field.
The balance of the game was only in doubt for the first minute and 48 seconds until Mark Dargon blasted the first SLU goal into the back of the net to give the Lions a 1-0 advantage and a lead they would not surrender.
The scoring barrage saw Saint Leo (6-1) head to the lockers up 15-0 and open up a 20-0 lead on the visitors from Rindge, New Hampshire before they finally stopped the Lions’ attempt at a shutout with 6:34 remaining in the third quarter.
It was a Sunday that Head Coach Brad Jorgensen was able to let some of his reserves log some quality playing time as Joe Anderson scored four goals and adding three assists. He also managed five ground ball pickups. After Ryan Groat surrendered faceoff duties, Cory Weindel went 9-for-17 and picked up eight ground balls in the win.
Four Lions, led by starters Joe Guerin and Luke Baruch scored three goals, with Kyle Marceau and Dargon coming off the bench to also get the hat trick.
Blake Barnett, starting in goal for the Lions in place of normal goalie David Erdman, only surrendered two goals and made 11 saves.
The Lions will now take their all-time-best starting record to the University Field grass again this coming Wednesday as they face St. Michael’s College. The game is scheduled to get underway at 7:00 p.m.
