SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo lacrosse team spent no time getting the scoring started as they scored less than three minutes into the game as they defeated Grand Canyon University, 17-8 in action at University Field on Thursday evening.

The Lions scoring barrage saw Ben Brigham and Joe Guerin blast three shots into goal and Kyle Marceau come off the bench to score two goals and post four assists.

SLU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter of action on goals from Joe Guerrin, Ryan Pomponio, Ben Brigham and defenseman Ryu Arakawa in transition.

The second quarter was much of the same as Ryan Askerberg and John McGuinness would hook up in transition for an early goal.

Saint Leo would build a commanding 9-0 lead until Jacob Hippensteel would score on assist from Billy Lloyd to break to shutout for the visiting Antelopes. The Lions would go into halftime with a 10-1 lead after Brigham electrified the crowd with a quick goal right before the horn.

A letdown in the third quarter allowed the visitors to score four goals and make the game interesting. The only goals in the quarter for the Green & Gold would come from Marceau and Luke Baruch.

The Lions would outscore Grand Canyon five to three in the final period of play as Saint Leo would get goals from Joe Guerrin, Brandon Trombley, Joe Anderson, Mark Walczyk and Marceau to put the finishing touches on the win.

Saint Leo will take a few days off before taking to University Field again on Monday.  The Lions will face Queen University (N.C.) in a 7:00 p.m. game.
