Saint Leo, Fla. (April 24, 2007) - Saint Leo University senior attackman Ryan Harris (Vestal, N.Y.) was named to the Deep South Conference All-Tournament Team after scoring a tournament-high four goals in the Lions’ 8-6 semifinal loss to eventual tournament champions Wingate University last week.
Wingate junior midfielder Stephen Torkington (Coronado, Calif.) was named the Most Valuable Player. The 11-member DSC All-Tournament team was elected by the league’s head coaches.
Torkington scored the game-winning goal with 5:53 remaining in the fourth quarter Sunday, helping the Bulldogs to an 8-6 victory over Catawba College in the championship game at Shuford Stadium in Salisbury, N.C. He led Wingate (11-4 overall) with two goals and one assist against Catawba. Torkington added a team-high two goals in an 11-6 DSC semi-final win over Saint Leo (Fla.) University Friday.
Torkington was one of five Bulldogs named to the DSC All-Tournament team. In addition to Torkington, senior Bryan Safarik (Vancouver, B.C., Canada), junior Kyle Costello (Wilmington, N.C.) and sophomores Evan Schaller (Kirkville, N.Y.) and Ryan Otterblad (Dumfries, Va.) were named to the honor squad.
Catawba had four players make the DSC All-Tournament team. Catawba sophomore midfielder Wayne Carbiener (Orlando, Fla.) tallied two goals in the Indians’ tough loss to Wingate Sunday. In addition to Carbiener, junior Kurt Green (San Diego, Calif.), junior Matt Puccio (Oakton, Va.) and freshman Nick Desper (Carrboro, N.C.) earned All-Tournament honors at the DSC event. Green recorded two goals and two assists in Catawba’s 9-6 semi-final victory over Mars Hill College Friday night.
Also earning a spot on the DSC All-Tournament team was freshman attack Danny Farmer (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) from Mars Hill. Farmer recorded two goals in the Lions’ semi-final loss to Catawba.
