Saint Leo, Fla. (March 27, 2007) – The Saint Leo University lacrosse team (5-5) scored the final four goals of the game to even its record at 5-5 in an 11-8 win over Southern New Hampshire University (1-2) on Tuesday afternoon at University Field.
Saint Leo was led by Ryan Harris (Sr., Vestal, N.Y.) who scored three goals and added two assists in the win. Benjamin Brigham (So., Scituate, Mass.), Chris Storrie (So., Syracuse, N.Y.) and Nick Masterpol (So., Syracuse, N.Y.) each scored two goals apiece with Masterpol also netting what proved to be the game-winning goal.
The Lions jumped out to an early lead, scoring the opening two goals of the contest with Brigham scoring first on an assist by Harris with 11:54 left in the opening quarter. Harris then doubled the advantage with 9:15 left in the first before Southern New Hampshire’s Jon Habel got the Penmen on the board.
SLU added another goal in the first to lead 3-1. Southern New Hampshire battled back to tie the score at the half by outscoring Saint Leo 4-2 in the second period.
The Lions kept the Penmen off the scoreboard in the third, as Storrie and Justin Bednarz (Sr., Sayreville, N.J.) netted goals for the Lions to open up another two-goal lead heading into the final quarter.
SNHU battled back with three unanswered goals at the start of the fourth period to take its first lead of the game. However, the lead was shot-lived as Saint Leo tied the game and regained the lead in a 53-second span. The Lions added another two goals late to wrap up the win.
The Lions will return to Deep South Conference play this weekend with a trip to Mars Hill N.C. and a game against Mars Hill College. The game will be Saturday at 3:00 pm.
