Men’s golf headed to SSC Championships

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo men's golf heads to Viera, Fla. to participate in the 2017 Sunshine State Conference Men's Golf Championships at the Duran Golf Club, hosted by the SSC and Florida Tech April 23-25.

Saint Leo, who took second a year ago at the SSC Championships, looks to return to the top two teams and surpass their mark and win the title. 

The Lions, the 2016 defending NCAA Division II National Champions, will bring new faces to their lineup as one of their five golfers from the 2016 SSC lineup returns to the championships. Ryan Gendron will be the lone returner as Saint Leo brings Casey Bannon, Simon KnutssonRiley Goss, and Colin Warren to the championships this season.

The 2016-17 Season
Saint Leo has finished in the top-10 at six of their eight tournaments this season with three of their five spring tournaments. The Lions best finish this season was third at the UIS Island Getaway at Rio Grande, Puerto Rico on October 24-25 before their sixth place finish at the Argonaut Invitational on April 3-4.

When the Lions played at Duran Golf Club earlier this season, March 6-7, at the Panther Invitational, the Green and Gold finished ninth out of 15 teams with a 306 total. Ryan Gendron led the team with a 223, which was good enough for ninth place. CJ Tyler finished tied for 40th with a 232 where Riley Goss and Simon Knutsson tied for 48th at 234. James Jessop rounded out the final five with a 67th place finish with a 241 total. Goss shot the Lions' low round of 73 for the three round tournament. 

At the SSC Championships
Ryan Gendron has finished in the top 10 in two of his three championship appearances (2016 T2nd – 221; 2015 T24th – 224; 2014 T9th – 217)
Casey Bannon has finished in the top 35 in his lone championship appearance (2015 33rd – 232)

Saint Leo has finished in the top-10 nine times where the Lions have finished in the top-5 in three of the last six SSC Championships (2011, 2014, 2016).

2016 SSC Championship – Saint Leo 2nd 899 (298-304-297)
At the 2016 championship, Gendron led the way with a 221 (+5) as he fired off rounds of 71-76-74 to tie for second overall behind Lynn's Manuel Torres, 219 (+3).

Liam Ainsworth was second on the team with a sixth-place finish with a 223 (+7), two strokes ahead of Joey Savoie in eighth place, 225 (+9). Ainsworth shot a 76 and 77 before firing a two-under 70 to close the tournament where Savoie fired off a 75-76-74 for his three rounds.

Hugo Bernard, playing as the No. 1 was the fourth best on the day as he tied for 20th with a 234 (+18). Bernard, who would eventually go on to win the NCAA DII Individual National Championship title in May, fired off rounds of 76-75-83. Griffin Clark rounded out the Lions golfers as Clark finished tied for 23rd with a 237 (+21) with cards of 78-80-79.
