RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – Saint Leo men's golf, ranked No. 13 by GolfStat, carded a 309 (+21) in the final round of the University of Illinois-Springfield's Island Getaway on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Resort's River Course to finish in third on the team leaderboard.
The Lions, who shot a two-round team total of 628 (+52), held a 10 stroke lead over fourth place team Delta State, 638 (+62), while trailing second place, and host, Illinois-Springfield by 32 strokes, 596 (+20). Sitting atop the team leaderboard was No. 16 Valdosta State who finished with a seven-stroke advantage at 589 (+13).
Winning the individual medalist honors were Nathan Goecks from Illinois-Springfield who finished the two-round tournament with a 140 (-4) total. Goecks fired off rounds of 71 and 69 over the 36 holes.
Ryan Gendron led all Saint Leo golfers on the individual leaderboard after completing the par 72, 6902-yard course with a three-over-par 75. Gendron added his three over to his four over from Monday's round for a two-round total of 151 (+7) to finish in eighth place.
Colby Tyler was second on the team after he added a second round 77 (+5) for a two-round total 158 (+14).
Nilo Sanchez rounded out the Lions in 21st place overall after a final round 79 (+7) for a total 163 (+19).
Saint Leo returns to action in the new year when they travel to the Matlock Invitational on February 13-14 to defend their team title from a year ago.
