SAINT LEO, Fla. – The 2016 National Champion Saint Leo University men's golf team will open their season with four fall tournaments, hosting two of them, and six spring events on their journey to defend their title in 2017, as the 2016-17 schedule announced Wednesday by head coach Chris Greenwood.
The Lions, who won the first national title in school history in May, start off the season as the No. 1 team in the nation and will host the Saint Leo Invitational on Sept. 19-20 at Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club.
"We are looking forward to the new season. We have an extremely competitive schedule again this year" said Greenwood. "The guys have been working hard. Hopefully, we can continue to build on our experiences from last year."
Saint Leo will the host the Division II National Preview at Reunion Resort in Kissimmee, Fla. on Oct. 3-4, before looking to defend their title at the Guy Harvey Shark Invitational on Oct. 10-11 at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., hosted by Nova Southeastern.
Rounding out their fall season, the Lions will take to the air and travel to the University of Illinois at Springfield Island Getaway in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, on Oct. 24-25.
After over 15 weeks off, Saint Leo opens their spring portion of the schedule with the Matlock Invitational, which the Lions won a year ago, hosted by Florida Southern at Lone Palm Country Club in Lakeland, Fla. on Feb. 13-14.
The Lions are scheduled to play in three tournaments in March with the Panther Invitational hosted by Florida Tech (March 6-7), the Southeastern Intercollegiate hosted by Valdosta State (March 12-14) and the Bobcat Invitational hosted by Georgia (March 20-21).
Saint Leo will take to the course one more time before their Sunshine State Conference tournament in April when they travel to Pensacola, Fla. to play in the Argonaut Invitational hosted by West Florida on April 3-4.
The Sunshine State Conference Men's Golf Championship will take place on April 23-25 in Melbourne, Fla., at the Duran Golf Club.
North Alabama will serve as host for the 2017 NCAA Division II Men's Golf South/Southeast Regional, which will be held May 8-10 at the Fighting Joe Course in Muscle Shoals, Ala. The 2017 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship will be hosted by the Sunshine State Conference at Reunion Resort and Club in Kissimmee, Fla., on May 22-26.
