SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo men's golfers Hugo Bernard and Ryan Gendron wrapped up the opening round of the U.S. Amateur championships on Monday, August 15 at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
Bernard, who played the south course, finished in a tie for 31st place after shooting a 69 (-1). Bernard recorded three bogeys and four birdies to make up his one-under, 69.
Gendron, who teed off earlier in the morning and played the north course, ended the day in a tie for 218th place. With four birdies on the day, Gendron shot a 75 (+5) for the first round.
Two duo looks to wrap up stroke play on Tuesday, August 16 at the Oakland Hills Country Club. Bernard tees off at 8:30 a.m. on the first tee of the north course where Gendron tees off at 1:10 p.m. on the south course first tee.
The U.S. Amateur Championship is made up of two rounds of stroke play to narrow down the field to 64-golfers. On the third day of competition, the style of play will change to match play for the final four days. Wednesday, August 17 will be the round of 64, with 32 matches, followed by the round of 32 and 16 both on Thursday, August 18, quarterfinals on Friday, August 19, and semifinals on Saturday, August 20. The finals of the U.S. Amateur will be on Sunday, August 21, consisted of 36-holes, 18 holes in the morning and 18 in the afternoon.
