SAINT LEO, Fla. – After winning the NCAA National Championship in May, members of the Saint Leo men's golf team have been keeping busy this summer in events to gear up for the 2016-17 season. Hugo Bernard, Ryan Gendron, Casey Bannon, James Jessop, Riley Goss and Colby Tyler have been out on the course following the championship run and competing outside of Saint Leo athletics.
Bernard has competed in tournament after tournament with the most recent action in a PGA event, the RBC Canadian Open July 21-22 at the Glen Abbey Golf Course in Oakville, Ontario, Canada. Bernard missed the cut but shot rounds of 81 and 76 for his first-ever PGA event at the RBC Canadian Open.
Bernard is currently playing at the Porter Cup at the Niagara Country Club in Lewiton, N.Y., July 27-30, where he shot a 70 (+1) and is sitting in T21 place after the first round. Bernard will kick off the second round today, Thursday, July 28, at 9 a.m.
Tyler competed in the Pennsylvania State Amanteur Championships at the Moselem Springs Golf Club in Fleetwood, Pa. on July 25-27 where he tied for 40th. Tyler shot a 222 (+12) with rounds of 74, 71 and 77.
Gendron played in the U.S. Amateur Qualifying on July 25-26 at the Cypress Run Golf Club in Tarpon Springs, Fla. where he walked away with a four-stroke victory, qualifying for the championships in August. Gendron shot rounds of 69 and 67 to make up his 136 total for the two-day event.
Bannon recently played at the U.S. Amateur Qualifying on July 25-26 at Amelia National Golf Club in Fernandina Beach, Fla. where he shot a 72 int he first round and a 75 in the second round to make up his 147. He played in the Oglethorpe Invitational on July 21-23 in Savannah, Ga. where he finished tied for 44th with a 219 total. Bannon opened the tournament up, at the Wilmington Island Club, with a 73 before a second round 72 and a third round 74.
Jessop played in the U.S. Amateur Championship qualifier on July 18-19 at the Coral Ridge Country Club in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. and recorded a 76 (+4), missing the cut to advance to the second round.
Bannon and Gendron played in the Florida Open Championship on July 15-17 in Orlando, Fla. at the Interlachen Country Club. Gendron tied for 12th, where he fired off three rounds of even-par 72's to finish with his 216 (E). Bannon finished in 32nd after rounds of 74+72+74 to make up his 220 (+4).
Goss played in two tournaments within the last month. At the Ontario Amateur over July 12 and 13, Goss shot an opening round 80 and then a 78 on the second round to finish with a 158 (+16) to miss the cut at the Thronhill Club. Following the Ontario AM, Goss took part in the Toronto Star Amateur on July 19-20 where he shot rounds of 77 and 72 to finish with a 149.
Upcoming events:Bernard will play in the Western Amateur on August 1-6 at the Knollwood Club in Lake Forest, Ill., and follow that up with the U.S. Amateur Championships on Aug. 15-21 at the Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
Gendron will join Bernard in the field at the U.S. Amateur Championships in August.
