GCAA Coach of the Year Release

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Saint Leo University head men's golf coach Chris Greenwood was named the 2016 Dave Williams Division II National Coach of the Year Award presented by Golf Pride Grips announced Monday, June 6th by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).

Greenwood, in his third year at the helm of the Lions, led the team to back-to-back NCAA National Championships appearances, this time with the title in hand. Greenwood had an NCAA individual qualifier in his first season at Saint Leo in 2013-14 and followed that up with a team appearance in 2014-15, ending as National Semifinalist. This season, the No. 2 Lions went to Denver, Colorado and came home with the title after defeating No. 1 Chico State 3-2 in the finals, for the University's first ever team National Championship on May 21st.

Saint Leo headed to Denver as the No. 2 team in the nation and had two team victories under their belts on the season, while the Lions finished in the top-5 in 11 of 12 tournaments. Greenwood and the Lions set the NCAA Championship record for team score through 36 and 54 holes, as freshman Hugo Bernard set the championship records for 36 and 54 individual holes en route to earning the national championship medalist honors. Bernard was the first ever individual or team national champion in school history when he was crowned the individual medalist on May 19th.

With the DII National Coach of the Year honors, coach Greenwood was named the Golf Pride South Region and District Coach of the Year. The National Coach of the Year honor was both a first in program history and Greenwood's career, while the Region honors are the third in his career.

Greenwood joins fellow Williams Award honorees John Fields (DI, Texas), Bim Jollymour (DIII, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps), Kyle Blaser (NAIA, Oklahoma City), Delnor Poss (NJCAA DI, Midland College) and Darin PInt (NJCAA DII, Kirkwood). All of the national winners will be presented their award during the Hall of Fame Banquet at the GCAA National Convention on December 12th.
