Bernard earns GCAA All-America and Phil Mickelson awards

DENVER, Colo. – Saint Leo freshman Hugo Bernard was named to the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) PING Division II All-America First Team, at the conclusion of stroke play on Thursday at the 2016 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship.

Bernard is Saint Leo's second PING All-America honoree, along with current junior Ryan Gendron who was an Honorable Mention PING All-America selection in 2014.

Bernard was also named the Division II recipient of the GCAA's Phil Mickelson Outstanding Freshman Award for 2016.

A native of Mont-Saint-Hilaire, Quebec, Canada, Bernard tallied a victory this season at the West Florida Argonaut Invitational, in addition to clinching the NCAA Division II individual national championship on Thursday afternoon. His score of -13 in the stroke play portion of the NCAA national championship eclipsed the 54-hole record co-held by Central Oklahoma's Josh Creel and Colorado School of Mines' Jim Knous. Bernard's national championship is the first NCAA title for either an individual or team at Saint Leo, and earned him the GCAA's Division II Arnold Palmer Award as the individual national champion.

Bernard finished fourth in four other events this spring, and was outside the top four only twice. He recorded par or better in 14 of his 24 rounds.

Bernard led Saint Leo to a first-place finish over 54 holes of stroke play at the 2016 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship, and the Lions head into the eight-team medal/match round as the no. 1 seed. Saint Leo will face no. 8 Wilmington University (Del.) on Friday morning starting at 7:35 a.m.
