Lions land four on DII PING All-Region team

NORMAN, Okla. – The No. 2 Saint Leo men's golf team saw four players earn Division II PING All-South Region as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America on Monday afternoon.

Liam Ainsworth, Ryan Gendron, Hugo Bernard, and Joey Savoie were each named to the All-South Region team, joining recipients from Barry, West Florida, Lynn, Florida Southern, Nova Southeastern, North Alabama, Delta State, Lee, and West Georgia. The Lions, along with UWF, Barry and Lynn, each had four representatives in the South.

Gendron, who was honored for a third-straight year, and Savoie repeat as All-South Region selections, while Bernard and Ainsworth earn their first nod.

Ainsworth, Savoie and Bernard were each named to the Sunshine State Conference Second Team, while Gendron medaled at the SSC meet after finishing second in the individual standings.

All four student-athletes are part of Saint Leo's five-man roster, joining Griffin Clark, in the quest for a national title as they head to the NCAA DII Championships this week.

At the South/Southeast Regional, Saint Leo finished second, earning a trip to nationals. Bernard led the way for the Lions on the course as he finished in fourth with a 212 (-4) after carding rounds of 71-72-69. Ainsworth was second on the team with a 219 (+3) with rounds of 78-69-72. Gendron and Savoie tied for 23rd with a score of 221 (+5). Gendron had rounds of 79-70-72, while Savoie fired off rounds of 77-69-75. Griffin Clark tied for 44th with a 227 total (+11) with 72-75-80.

The Lions will be making their second consecutive trip to the national tournament as they were 2015 National Semifinalist. Gendron will be making his third-straight appearance at the national championships as he played as an individual in 2014.
