HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's golf team, ranked No. 2 in the nation by GolfStat, finished in 10th after the first 18 holes of the 2016 NCAA South/Southeast Regional on Monday, May 2nd at Mission Inn Resort & Club on the par-72, 6,928-yard El Campeon course.
The Lions finished day one of the regional with a 298 (+10) to start their 2016 postseason run in 10th place and look to improve on that spot tomorrow on the course. Hugo Bernard led the way on day one as he tied for 11h with a one-under, 71. Griffin Clark tied for 19th after carding an even-par, 72 for the first 18 holes of the postseason. Joey Savoie tied for 61st with a plus-five, 77, as Liam Ainsworth sits in a tie for 70th with a 78 (+6). Ryan Gendron closes out the pack as he sits in a tie for 79th with a 79 (+7).
Hugo Bernard, playing as the four this week, led the team with a first day 71 (-1). Bernard shot a 37 (+2) on the front nine and carded a three-under, 34, on the back nine to make up his 71. Bernard opened the back nine up with back-to-back birdies before a birdie on 17 to finish his round.
Griffin Clark, the Lions' number five, was second on the team shooting an even-par 72 in round one. Clark turned in a 36 (+1) on the front nine before going one under with two birdies on the back for his even par performance. Overall, Clark led the team on the day with birdies as he had four during the course of play Monday.
Joey Savoie is in the middle of the pack on the team after a 77 (+5) day one score. Savoie finished the front nine at plus-four, 39, before getting back to even with a one over, 38 on the back for his five over round. Savoie found himself two birdies on the card today with one on the front and one on the back.
Liam Ainsworth fired off a 78 (+6) on day one after carding a 40 on the front nine. Ainsworth matched Savoie's one-over 38 on the back nine to make up his six over, 78. On the day, Ainsworth recorded two birdies, after starting the day with a birdie on the first hole.
Ryan Gendron finished on the heels of Ainsworth at plus-seven, 79, after round one. Gendron stumbled out of the gates but came roaring back on the back nine. Gendron shot a 41 (+6) on El Campeon's front nine before a 38 (+1) on the back nine. Gendron recorded two birdies on the back nine holes.
West Florida's Chandler Blanchet and Lynn's Manuel Torres are in the club house tied for first in the individual side with a seven-under 65 for round one. West Florida is leading the team leaderboard at eight-under (280) where Lynn sits just two strokes off at six-under, 282.
Saint Leo returns to action tomorrow, May 3rd at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional where the Lions look to improve their position during the second round of 18. Play begins tomorrow at 7:30 am, where Saint Leo will tee off at 12:30 pm.
