MELBOURNE, Fla. – Out of the 12 student-athletes on the 2016 All-Sunshine State Conference men's golf teams, three Saint Leo Lions have been placed on the All-SSC Second Team. Saint Leo, Lynn and Florida Southern led the way with three selections a piece, while Barry filled in the other two golfers with Nova Southeastern had the lone Honorable Mention.
Senior Liam Ainsworth, junior Joey Savoie and freshman Hugo Bernard were all named to the All-SSC Second Team. This was Savoie's second year in a row on the second team and a first for Bernard and Ainsworth.
"It's always an honor to have some of our guys recognized as top players in a conference as strong as the SUnshine State" head coach Chris Greenwood mentioned of the trio being selected to the All-SSC Second Team.
The three golfers led the Lions to a second place finish at the SSC Championships and were joined by Ryan Gendron and Griffin Clark at that tournament. Saint Leo finished 12-strokes off the leader Lynn, but finished the 54-hole event with a nine stroke cushion in front of Florida Southern. Gendron led the team with a second place finish at 221 (+5). Ainsworth was second on the team at the conference championships with a sixth place finish at 223 (+7), where Savoie was third in eighth place with a 225 (+9). Bernard took 20th at the tournament with a 234 (+18) and Clark was in 23rd to keep all five Lions within the top-25 with a 237 (+21). Lynn's Manuel Torres won the individual title by two strokes with a three round total of 219 (+3).
All three Saint Leo golfers were named to the Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year semifinalist list presented by Barbasol. Saint Leo was the only school in the 30-man list to get four student-athletes on there, while the SSC had 12 golfers on the list. Ryan Gendron joined his three teammates on the semifinalist list. Finalists for the award will be announced on May 12th.
Saint Leo is ranked No. 2 in the nation by GolfStat and will take that ranking into the 2016 NCAA South/Southeast Regional this coming week, May 2nd through May 4th. The regional will be held at the Mission Inn Resort and Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., where the 20-team field will play the El Campeon course.
