No.1 Lions Sit in Fourth at Regional Preview after Two Rounds

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – Saint Leo's men's golf team, ranked No. 1 in the nation, currently sits in fourth place after two rounds of the South/Southeast Regional Preview at the Mission Inn Resort and Club El Campeón course on Monday, February 29th after shooting a 592 (+16).

The Lions were tied for third after round one after shooting a 299. Saint Leo improved on the course but fell to fourth with a 293 second round total. The No. 1 Lions sit at 592 behind No. 7 Lynn (572) who leads the field. No. 6 Florida Southern sits in second with a 588 while No. 2 Chico State is third with a 590.

Hugo Bernard leads the way for Saint Leo as he heads into the final round tied for third at minus one (143). Bernard carded a 73 in the first round and was tied for seventh before shaving off three strokes to finish with a 70 in the second round.

Liam Ainsworth sits in 15th after a two round total of 148 (+4), where Joey Savoie is tied for 18th at 150 (+6).

ROUND 1 – T-3rd 299

In the first round of the tournament, Hugo Bernard led the Lions with a seventh place finish after carding a 73 (+1). Bernard made one birdie in the first round after going plus-two on the front nine and made up for that on the back nine shooting one under par.

Joey Savoie finished in 18th with a 75 (+3) in round one, tying with teammates Casey Bannon and Riley Goss, who is playing as an individual. Liam Ainsworth and Ryan Gendron tied for 29th at 76 (+4).

ROUND 2 – 4th 293

Bernard climbed four places in round two finishing in third after firing off a round of 70 (-2) to finish with a 143 total. On the front nine in the second round, Bernard finished even before going two under on the back nine. He finished the second round with four birdies to end the first two rounds with a five birdies.

Ainsworth made a move in the second round after shooting an even par to jump 14 places to tie for 15th with a 36-hole total of 148 (+4). Ainsworth started the second round off with an eagle on hole one before finishing the front nine at plus one. Later he would make two birdies on the back to finish at minus one for the round.

Joey Savoie stayed in 18th with back to back rounds of 75 for his 150 (+6) total. Ryan Gendron improved four spots to 25th for 152 (+8).
