SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo's men's golf team earned the No. 1 rank in the country in the latest GolfStat rankings on February 17th following their victory at the Matlock Collegiate Classic.
Golfstat compiles results from every tournament played in Division II and releases relative rankings based on results. The Lions have the lowest scoring average in Division II with a 71.57. Saint Leo went up against eight of the top-25 teams and won the Matlock Classic by eight strokes.
The Lions won the Matlock with a final 869 (+5) score total as Saint Leo senior Liam Ainsworth won the individual title carding a 215 (-1) in the three rounds. Ainsworth went on to be named the Sunshine State Conference Men's Golfer of the Week.
Saint Leo is led by Joey Savoie who is tied for 13th in the nation in score versus par. Savoie averages a 71.20 after 15 rounds of competition where he is at -0.60 under-par. Joining Savoie in the top-20 is Liam Ainsworth is ranked 18th in score versus par where he averages a 71.53 after 15 rounds of golf, and -0.27 under-par.
The men's golf team returns to action on February 29th and March 1st when they host the South/Southeastern Regional Preview at Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
