Darkness pauses second round of McDonough Cup

ORLANDO, Fla. -- After close to 30 rounds of action at the McDonough Cup, the Saint Leo men's golf team sits tied for sixth in a field of 22 teams. The Lions are six-under at the Par 72 - 6955 yards, Rio Pinar Country Club. 

The Basics
Results: Saint Leo finished tied for eighth after the first round of the McDonough Cup, hosted by Rollins College. Just over halfway into the second round, darkness fell on the course, and the second round was paused until Tuesday. Play will resume Tuesday morning, followed by the third round.

The Low Down

  • All five team qualifiers turned in three birdies a piece for the Lions. Liam Ainsworth led Saint Leo with a first round 70 and was the only Lion to score under par. 
  • Ryan Gendron, Joey Savoie and Daniel Pico were tied for 42nd after 18 holes. 
  • Griffin Clark shot a first round 77, and Riley Goss scored a first round 72 as an individual and turned in a team best four birdies. 
  • The Lions jumped two spots at the midway point of the second round. Gendron leads the team at three-under par through 34-holes thanks to an eagle on the par-five, 510 yards, 15th hole. The junior has four birdies and an eagle in the second round. 

The Rest of the Field

  • No. 5 West Florida leads the 22 team field after one round at nine-under par. All five Argonauts shot under par. 
  • No. 15 Flagler, and no. 17 Georgia Southwestern also came in at nine-under par, to lead the field. 
  • Emil Sorebo (Rollins) was the individual leader after 18-holes after shooting a first round 64. Sorebo led the Tars to a first round 12th place finish.

  • The Lions return to action Tuesday McDonough Cup in Orlando, Fla. Saint Leo will resume play at 8:15 tomorrow morning and roll right into round three with the same pairings as round 1 and 2.
