NORMAN, Okla. -- Despite receiving five first-place votes, the Saint Leo University Men's Golf team was voted third by Division II golf coaches in the Bushnell Golfweek Division II Coaches Poll.
Chico State claimed 11 first-place votes to become the top-ranked team and the Wildcats rise to the top of the poll snapped Nova Southeastern's streak of nine straight rankings at No. 1.
Nova Southeastern tallied one first-place vote in its drop to second. Third-ranked Saint Leo moved up eight spots and claimed the five remaining first-place votes. Barry fell a spot to fourth while fifth-ranked West Florida moved up from No. 10. Florida Southern check in at No. 6 and is followed by USC Aiken, CSU Monterey Bay, Lynn and Central Missouri.
Carson-Newman (#20) and California Baptist (T22) debuted in the top 25 while Indianapolis returned to the ranking.
The Lions return to action next week at the McDonough Cup hosted by Rollins at the Rio Pinar Country Club. Previously known as the Rollins Invitational, the Tars' home tournament was renamed in 2012 to honor former player James McDonough.
In its last outing, Saint Leo rose to the top of an 18-team field, and ran away the title thanks to a seven-stroke lead.
Last week the Saint Leo topped the Golf Stat rankings for the first time in program history.
The Lions have the lowest scoring average in Division II with a 71.32. Saint Leo has gone head-to-head with 14 top-25 teams thus far and has compiled a record of 16-4-1. In the Sunshine State Conference, the Lions have gone 13-1-1.
