SAINT LEO, Fla. -- The Saint Leo University men's golf team released its 2015-16 Tournament schedule Wednesday, which includes 10 tournaments across the South/Southeast Region. The Lions look to return to the national stage after their semifinal appearance last spring.
"We play one of the most competitive schedules year in, and year out," said head coach Chris Greenwood. "This year is no different. It helps that we are in the toughest conferences in the country. When you're playing against the highest ranked teams every weekend, it prepares you for NCAA Regionals and Nationals."
Saint Leo is slated to play in four fall tournaments and open the fall season at the Cougar Invitational hosted by Columbus State September 21-22. The Green and Gold will make the trip to Columbus, Ga. for just the third time in the past 10 years and it will be the Lions first trip since 2013.
The Lions will host its annual Saint Leo Invitational at Lake Jovita Country Club September 28-29. The Tournament will feature 10 teams from the 2015 NCAA Men's Golf Super Regional hosted by Saint Leo, and five teams ranked Top-10 in the Bushnell Golfweek Division II Coaches Preseason Poll. The last time Saint Leo won its own invitational was 2007.
"It's always nice to be at home. It's a golf course we play every day and it gives us a chance to build some confidence against some really good teams. When we travel, we are limited to five golfers, but hosting allows us individuals compete and gain experience."
In October, Saint Leo will head to the Guy Harvey Shark Invitational, hosted by defending National Champion Nova Southeastern October 12-13. The 52-hole tournament will take place at the PGA National Resort and Spa in West Palm Beach. Fla. The Lions will close out the fall at the McDonough Cup hosted by Rollins College at Rio Pinar Country Club in Orlando, Fla.
Saint Leo returns to action February 8-9 at the Matlock Collegiate Classic hosted by Florida Southern. The Mocs made it to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship in 2015 and will host several top-25 teams at Lone Palm Golf Club in Lakeland, Fla.
The South/Southeastern Super Regional Preview will be held February 29-March 1 at Mission Inn Resort & Club. Mission Inn has served as a venue for national collegiate finals in 17 of the past 18 years – and in that other year (2013) hosted the NCAA Men's Division II Southeast Regionals.
March 13-15, Saint Leo heads to the Southeastern Intercollegiate hosted by Valdosta State at the Kinderlou Forest Golf Club.
"We are defending champions at Valdosta. Anytime you're defending, you look forward to go back."
The Lions took the crown, winning their first tournament since 2013. Saint Leo won the Intercollegiate by a wide nine-stroke margin and defeated three top-10 teams.
Saint Leo will round out its regular season at the Bobcat Invitational hosted by Georgia College February 21-22 and at the Argonaut Invitational hosted by West Florida April 4-5.
The Sunshine State Conference Men's Golf Championship will be hosted by Barry University on April 17-19 at Crandon Golf at Key Biscayne – rated one of the nation's top public golf courses after Bethpage Black and Torrey Pines.
NCAA Regionals will be played at Mission Inn, hosted by the Sunshine State Conference May 2-4. The 2016 NCAA DII Men's Golf Championship will May 16-20 in Denver, Colo.
