CONOVER, N.C. -- Saint Leo carded a six-over par 290 in the third and final round of stroke play at the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships on Wednesday to tie for third place after 54-holes of competition. The Lions earn the No. 4 seed in match play on the par-71, 7,021-yard Rock Barn Golf & Spa Jones Course.
The Lions finished six-over 858 to tie with Central Missouri for third place as Lynn clinched the No. 1 seed at one-over par 853. Nova Southeastern finished second at three-over 855, and Simon Fraser turned in a seven-over par 859 to earn the fifth seed. South Carolina-Aiken is in fifth at 15-over par 867, and Chico State followed at +18, 870 for seventh. Florida Southern snuck into the final spot of medal match play at 20-over par 872.
Joey Savoie posted the Lions' low round of the day with a 69, sinking a birdies on the 16th and 17th holes. He finished tied for fourth overall at 3-under 210 (71-70-69).
Ryan Gendron completed his second consecutive NCAA appearance with a third place finish. The All-American finished third as sophomore at 4-under 209 (70-67-72). Gendron and Savoie turned in the highest finishes by Saint Leo players at the NCAA Championships in program history. To date JP Albuquerque finished tied for 23rd at the 2010 Championship.
Saint Leo was one of only two teams in the 20-team field to have two golfers finish in the top-10.
Ainsworth finished tied for 33rd at six-over 219 after rounds of 73-70-76. Jessop tied for 39th at seven-over, shooting rounds of 76-71-73.
Saint Leo will face Simon Fraser in Thursday morning's quarter finals that will tee-off at 7:40 am. The Lions are on the same sid of the bracket as No. 1 Lynn and No. 8 Florida Southern. Nova Southeastern will play Chico State and Central Missouri will face South Carolina-Aiken.
