Men's Golf in ninth after day one of 2015 NCAA Championship

CONOVER, N.C. -- The Saint Leo men's golf team fought its way through the opening round of the 2015 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship, finishing with a 6-over par 290 on Monday afternoon. The Lions will enter the second round in ninth position overall. 

The Lions collected 13 birdies on the par-71, 7,021 Rock Barn Golf & Spa Jones Course. Saint Leo is only 11 strokes of the leader, Nova Southeastern (279, -5). Lynn holds the second slot (283, -1), and South Carolina-Aiken follows in third (284, E). Central Oklahoma and Central Missouri are tied for fourth (287, +3), and Indiana University of Pa. is in sixth (288, +4). Chico State and Simon Fraser are tied for seventh (289, +5), Saint Leo is ninth and Barry rounds out the top-10 (293, +9). Five of the six advancing teams from the South/Southeast Regional are currently in the top-10, while four Sunshine State Conference members are also represented.  

Sophomore Ryan Gendron led the seventh-ranked Lions, as he carded a 1-under par 70. Gendron shot the Lions low score of the day, and is tied for sixth thanks to three birdies. Joey Savoie collected a team best four birdies, including three on the front nine, and will enter Tuesday's second round in a tie for 21st. Savoie finished the first round at even par. Sophomore Liam Ainsworth is in a tie for 34th with a 2-over par 73, while James Jessop shot a 5-over 76 and is tied for 64th. Casey Bannon rounded out the Lions' individuals with a 78. 

The Lions will be paired with Le Moyne College and West Texas A&M during Tuesday's second round. The teams will tee-off on hole No. 1 beginning at 7:30 am. Live scoring throughout the championship can be found on
