DADE CITY, Fla. -- The Saint Leo men's golf team enters Wednesday's final round of the NCAA South/Southeast Regional in fifth place. The Lions dropped eight strokes off Monday's total on the par-72, 7,098 yard course for a second round score of 288 at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club.
The Lions carded the second best round of the 20-team field, and sit 22 strokes behind the leader Lynn University (562, -14). Four of the top-five spots are held by Sunshine State Conference members. Nova Southeastern (570, -6) lies in second place, while defending champion Barry (582, +6) sits in third and South Carolina Aiken (583, +7) follows in fourth. Saint Leo has a 36-hole score of 584 (+8) and holds an eight stroke lead over a pair of SSC teams in a two-way tie for sixth.
James Jessop shot the squads first under-par score of the tournament, carding a 70 (-2) and the redshirt-freshman jumped to a five-way tie for 12th place. Combined with his first round score of 74, Jessop is even through 18 holes.
Ryan Gendron is tied for 17th place at 1-over par thanks to an even second round. Gendron has accumulated nine birdies, including four on Tuesday. Joey Savoie remained steady and carded a 73 for a combined 150 (+20). Liam Ainsworth also carded a second round 73, besting his first round 78. Erick Alonso rounded out the Lions and scored an 88.
Saint Leo will tee off Wednesday afternoon beginning at 12:00. The Lions are paired with South Carolina-Aiken and Florida Southern in the final round.
