Lions place sixth at SSC Championship

SORRENTO, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's golf team carded a 301 (+13) to complete play at the 2015 Sunshine State Conference Men's Golf Championship on Tuesday, finishing sixth out of nine teams in the field.

The Lions posted an 889 (+25) for the tournament, finishing eight strokes behind fifth-place Barry University with an 881 (+17).

Lynn University captured its first SSC title since 2006 with a three-day total of 852 (-12), after shooting a one-under 287 in Tuesday's final round.

Nova Southeastern was eight strokes back in second place on the team leaderboard with an 860 (-4), following a four-under 284 over the final 18 holes. Florida Southern was third with a three-day score of 866 (+2), followed by Florida Tech in fourth place with an 870 (+6).

Sophomore Joey Savoie was the top Saint Leo finisher on the individual leaderboard, after firing a one-over 73 on Tuesday for a three-day tally of 214 (-2). Savoie was tied for seventh overall with Tampa's Zach Schuster, who shot a 70 in the final round.

Junior Liam Ainsworth carded a 75 on Tuesday and was three-over for the tournament with a 219, and finished 18th overall. Sophomore Ryan Gendron was tied for 24th with a 77 (+5) in the third round and an eight-over 224 for the tournament, while sophomore Casey Bannon finished 33rd overall with a 232 (+16) for the tournament, after carding a 76 in the final round.

Erick Alonso was 41st in the field with a three-day score of 239 (+23), and shot a round of 80 on Tuesday.

Florida Southern finished 1-2 in the championship, with John Van Der Laan taking individual medalist honors with a nine-under 207 for the tournament. He fired a three-under 69 on Tuesday. Teammate John Coultas was three strokes back in sole possession of second place with a three-day score of 210 (-6).
