SORRENTO, Fla. -- The Saint Leo men's golf team sits in sixth place after the first round of the Sunshine State Conference Men's Golf Championship on Sunday afternoon. The tournament is being played at the RedTail Golf Club in Sorrento, Fla. Sunday's play was the first of the three round, 54-hole tournament.
As a team the Lions shot 10-over Sunday, for a team score of 298.
Sophomore Joey Savoie led the Lions in sixth place and fired a first round score of 70 (-2) on the par-72, 7,152 yard course. Savoie holed the tournaments only eagle on the par-5 second hole. Liam Ainsworth and Ryan Gendron posted rounds of 75 (+3) and share a seven-way tie for 22nd. Casey Bannon carded a 78 (+6) and Erick Alonso shot +9, 81 for the Lions.
Florida Tech leads the tournament after the first 18 holes and has four stroke lead (280, -8) over second place Lynn (284, -4). Joe Ellis (Florida Tech), John Van Der Laan (Florida Southern), John Coultas (Florida Southern) and Santiago Gomez (Nova Southeastern) carded 67s and share a piece of first place. The group has a two-stroke lead over the 45 player field.
Saint Leo will tee off Monday morning beginning at 9:05. The Lions are paired with Barry and Nova Southeastern in the second round.
