EATONTON, Ga. -- No. 6 Saint Leo men's golf jumped three places between the first and second rounds of the Bobcat Invitational Monday. The Lions trail top-ranked Nova Southeastern by eight strokes after 36-holes at the par 70, 6,730 yards Cuscowilla on Lake Oconee Golf Club.
The Lions opened the Bobcat Invitational with a first round 282, and sat in fourth place after 18 holes. Shortly after the second round began, the compeition faltered, but Saint Leo remained stead and jumped two slots to move into second place in team standings after two complete rounds. The Green and Gold's ascension came via a third round score of 283, the third lowest team score of the day.
No. 1 Nova Southeastern leads the 17-team field at 3-under par and Saint Leo sits eight strokes back at 5-over par. No. 5 Lynn and No. 4 South Carolina-Aiken follow close behind at 6-over and Armstorng State and Rollins College round out the top-five teams thanks to a 10-over par day.
West Florida's Chandler Blanchet tops the individual leaderboard, but Trevor Joseph and South Carolina-Aiken's Axel Ostensson are in tied for second after two rounds. Ostensson currently ranks 52nd in Division II, while no. 39 Jimmy Jones (Florida Southern) and no. 2 Richard Mansell (Nova Southeastern) each fall behind Joseph.
Joseph led the Lions thanks to a 3-under par day one. In the opening round the Tampa native shot an even 70 but shaved three strokes off in the second round and carded a 67 (-3).
Joey Savoie sits in a tie for 18th place individually and trails the leader by just seven shots. Savoie shot back-to-back 71 for a 36-hole score of 142 (+2). Liam Ainsworth is also tied for 18th, and carded a 70-72 in the first two rounds.
Saint Leo will be paired with no. 1 Nova Southeastern and no. 5 Lynn for the final round on Tuesday. The trio is set to tee-off at 10:00 am on the first hole.
