VALDOSTA, Ga. -- The Saint Leo men's golf team sits in fifth place through 18 holes at the First Federal Southeastern Collegiate Tournament hosted by Valdosta State University. The Lions shot a team 292 (+4) on the par 72, 7,311 yard course at Kinderlou Forest.
Sophomore Joey Savoie turned in four birdies, including two on the 17 and 18 for a first round score of 70 (-2). The Quebec native leads the Lions in seventh place, the fourth best finish by a Sunshine State Conference golfer.
Liam Ainsworth carded a 73 (+1) in the first round and currently lies in a seven-way tie for 19th place. Ryan Gendron scored 74 in 18 holes, while Erick Alonso and Trevor Joseph rounded out the Lions contigent with 18-hole scores of 75 (+3) and 77 (+5) respectively.
No. 5 Lynn University currently leads the 18-team field at 1-under and No. 10 Flagler College follows one stroke behind, even for the day. Flagler's Zach Horne leads 90 individuals and scored 67 (-5) in the first round.
Of the 18 teams competing in the Southeastern Collegiate, four are ranked among the top 10 in the nation, led by two-time defending NCAA Division II champion and second-ranked Barry. No. 5 Lynn joins the Bucs, as does No. 7 Saint Leo and No. 10 Flagler.
Individually, 15 of the top 50 ranked players in the nation will take to the course at the par 72, 7,311 yard course at Kinderlou Forest. Leading the individuals is No. 6 John Coultas of Florida Southern while seventh-ranked Mateo Gomez of Lynn, No. 8 Joey Savoie of Saint Leo and No. 10 Juan Miguel Heredia of West Florida.
The Lions return to Kinderlou Forest for the second round of the Southeastern Collegiate tomorrow beginning at 9:15. Saint Leo will be paired with Armstrong State and Georgia College.
