Lions complete Classic in eighth place

Lakeland, Fla. -- Saint Leo men's golf junior Liam Ainsworth shot a combined 148 in Tuesday's second and third round at the Matlock Collegiate Classic, leading the Lions to a eighth place team finish in the 15-team event. 

The team carded a 294 and 293 over Tuesday's 36 holes. Round two carried over from Monday, but the field was able to complete the 54-hole tournament. Saint Leo finished with a two-day tally of 875. 

Nova Southeastern won the Classic and tied the tournament scoring record with an 838 (-26). The record was previously set two years ago by Barry. The runner-up score by Barry (848, -16) this year was the best for a 2nd place team since 1995 when Virginia was at -19.

Ainsworth was tied for 20th on the individual leaderboard with a 75 (+3) and 73 (+1). Ainsowrth completed the Classic with a three round score of 218. Sophomore Casey Bannon bested his first round score of 75, with a 1-over par 73 second round score and a 1-under par 71 in the third round. Bannon finished tied for 24th with a 54-hole score of 219.

Joey Savoie and Ryan Gendron tied for 33rd with a combined score of 221. Savoie went 75 & 74 in rounds two and three while Gendron scored 71 and 75. Erick Alonso rounded out the Lions in 50th place. The freshman turned in a second round score of 76 and a third round score of 78. 

Individual title winner, Adam Svensson (Barry) is the fourth player in tournament history to win back-to-back individual titles. Svensson's -12 ties the second lowest individual score for a tournament, four strokes behind the record set by Florida Southern's Tim Crouch in 2013.
