LAKELAND, Fla. -- Junior Liam Ainsworth opened the spring campaign with a 2-under 70 opening round at the Matlock Collegiate Classic, ranking in 11th place individually. As a team, the Lions are slotted eighth, 11 strokes off the leader Nova Southeastern.
Saint Leo finished even (288) on the day, paced by Ainsworth. The London, England product is three shots off pace of the tournament leader Santiago Gomez (Nova Southeastern). Freshman Erick Alonso was Saint Leo's next best performer, carding a 1-under 71, good enough for 19th place. Alonso scored a 33 on the back, Saint Leo's best nine-hole score of the day. Joey Savoie scored even, while Casey Bannon and Ryan Gendron each shot a 75.
The Matlock Collegiate Classic features nine teams from the NCAA DII Golfstat Top-20 rankings. Seven teams in the first round under par are the most at the Matlock for one round since 1999. 23 golfers shot under par, the most for any round since 1999. Nova Southeastern's 11-under is the best opening round score since Alabama's 277 (-11) round in the '99 tournament. It's also the best shot in the eight years the tournament has been held at Lone Palm, tying Clayton State's 277 shot in the second round in 2009.
The second round of the day was rained out, and will be completed Tuesday. Gendron is 1-under through nine, while Ainsworth, Savoie and Bannon are even. Alonso sits two shots over. The rest of round two and round three are scheduled for 8:00 am at Lone Palm Golf Club.
