Savoie tied for fifth to lead Lions at McDonough Cup

ORLANDO, Fla. – Saint Leo sophomore Joey Savoie fired a two-under 70 in his final round to finish tied for fifth at the Rollins College McDonough Cup, Tuesday afternoon at the Rio Pinar Country Club.

Savoie posted a two-under 214 over 72 holes on the par 72, 6,955-yard Rio Pinar course, and was tied with Lynn's Jose Andres Miranda and Nova Southeastern's Ethan Marcus. All three were four strokes off the pace set by Florida Southern's John Van Der Laan, who fired a 69 on Tuesday to claim medalist honors with a six-under 210.

Fellow sophomore Ryan Gendron posted a 76 in his third round to finish with a four-over 220 for the tournament, tied for 21st on the individual leaderboard.

Junior Liam Ainsworth rallied to fire a one-under 71 on Tuesday, and closed the tournament with a nine-over 225 to finish 51st overall. Freshman Erick Alonso carded an 80 on Tuesday and tallied a 229 over three rounds, while freshman teammate C.J. Tyler shot a 78 in his final round to finish 230 for the tournament.

As a team, the Lions climbed one spot from their finish after Monday's two rounds and placed fifth in a tie with 15th-ranked West Florida and Tampa. Saint Leo carded a 295 in Tuesday's round of 18 holes, and posted an 884 (+20) for the tournament.

No. 6 Lynn captured the team title with an 11-under 853, after carding a 287 in Tuesday's final round. Top-ranked Nova Southeastern finished second with a 285 on Tuesday and an 856 for the tournament, three strokes off the pace set by the Fighting Knights. No. 17-ranked Florida Southern placed third with a 874 over 72 holes following the 292 the Mocs shot on Tuesday.

The McDonough Cup marked the end of the Lions' fall 2014 slate of tournaments. Saint Leo men's golf will return to competition on Monday, Feb. 9, when it competes at the Florida Southern Matlock Invitational in Lakeland, Fla.
