Men’s golf tied for sixth after day one at McDonough Cup

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's golf team wrapped up day one of competition at the Rollins College McDonough Cup tied for sixth place out of 18 teams, Monday afternoon at the Rio Pinar Country Club.

The Lions carded a 301 in the first round and a 288 in the second, to finish the day with a 589 (+13) on the par 72, 6,955-yard Rio Pinar course.

Sophomores Joey Savoie and Ryan Gendron were each tied for ninth on the individual leaderboard with a 36-hole score of 144. Savoie fired a 72 in each of his two rounds on Monday, while Gendron carded a 75 on his first 18 and a 69 on his second trip around the course.

Freshman Erick Alonso carded rounds of 76 and 73 for a 149 and is tied for 40th on the leaderboard. Fellow freshman C.J. Tyler posted scores of 78 and 74 for a 152, and is tied for 56th. Junior Liam Ainsworth shot a 79 and a 75 in his two rounds, for a 154.

No. 6 Lynn University sits atop the team leaderboard with a 566 (-10), while top-ranked Nova Southeastern is in second place with a five-under 571. No. 19 Florida Tech returned to the clubhouse in third place with a 580 (+4), while No. 17 Florida Southern is two strokes back at 582 (+6).

Lynn's Elliott Whitley is in first place among individuals with two rounds of 67 for a 10-under 134. Nova Southeastern's Santiago Gomez and Florida Tech's Ryan Carter are tied for second place five strokes off the pace.

Saint Leo completes the tournament on Tuesday with a final round of 18 holes. The Lions will tee off no. 1 starting at 8:40 a.m.
