Men’s golf climbs to No. 19 in GCAA poll

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo University men's golf got a boost to No. 19 in the latest Golf Coaches Association of American (GCAA) Division II Coaches Poll, which was released Friday.

The Lions received a boost in the poll following their seventh-place finish at the Saint Leo Invitational on September 22-23. That tournament boasted a field of 17 teams, 12 of whom were ranked among the top 25 in the GCAA Division II preseason poll.

Sunshine State Conference foe Barry University remains atop the poll in the No. 1 spot, while Nova Southeastern University is ranked second. Lynn University climbed up to No. 4 in the poll, giving the SCC three teams among the top five.

No. 16 Florida Tech and No. 18 Florida Southern round out the list of SSC teams in the poll.

Saint Leo will be participating in another stacked tournament early next week, when it heads to Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., for Nova Southeastern's Guy Harvey Invitational on Monday, Oct. 6, and Tuesday, Oct. 7.

The Guy Harvey Invitational field includes nine teams among the updated top 25, including all Saint Leo's ranked SSC rivals.

The tournament will be played on the par 72, 7045-yard Champion course at the PGA National Resort and Spa, regarded by the PGA Tour as the toughest golf course in Florida. Redesigned by Jack Nicklaus in 1990, it is the site of the annual Honda Classic. The competitors will play 36 continuous holes on Monday, followed by 18 holes on Tuesday.

Sophomore Joey Savoie paces the Lions with his 69.00 stroke average following the Saint Leo Invite, while junior Liam Ainsworth has fired an average of 71.00 over his two rounds this season.
