SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University men's golf team welcomes 16 teams, including many of the top teams in NCAA Division II, to its home course on Monday and Tuesday for the season-opening Saint Leo Invitational.
The Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club will play host to the 54-hole tournament, which begins play on the par 72, 7104-yard South Course on Monday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. The teams will play 36 holes on the first day.
Play concludes on Tuesday with 18 holes starting at 8:00 a.m. off split tees.
The field for the 2014 Saint Leo Invitational may be the toughest the Lions see all season long. Twelve out of the 17 teams are ranked in the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) Preseason Top 25 poll, including the 24th-ranked Lions. Seven teams among the top ten will be participating in this year's Saint Leo Invitational, including Sunshine State Conference rival and defending national champion Barry University, who sit atop the 2014-15 preseason rankings.
The 2014-15 edition of Saint Leo men's golf will be paced by a pair of sophomores, Joey Savoie and Ryan Gendron. Gendron captured PING Honorable Mention All-America honors at the end of last season, and was given the nod to the Mickelson All-Freshman Team. He averaged 73.39 strokes over 23 rounds played in 2013-14. Savoie averaged 73.75 strokes last season, second best average on the team.
Junior Liam Ainsworth, sophomore Casey Bannon, and freshman Erick Alonso round out the five who will score for the Lions in this week's tournament, while junior Trevor Joseph, sophomore James Jessop, and freshmen Marcus Crowe, Colby Tyler, and Riley Goss will compete as individuals.
