SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo University men's golf will tee off the 2014-15 season ranked 24th in the nation, according to Thursday's Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) Division II Coaches Preseason Poll.
The Lions were ranked as high as 20th during the 2013-14 season, after beginning the season unranked.
The 2014-15 Saint Leo squad is anchored by sophomore Ryan Gendron, who averaged 73.39 strokes over his 23 rounds played last season. Gendron captured PING Honorable Mention All-America honors last season and was tabbed for the Mickelson All-Freshman Team.
Other top returnees include sophomore Joey Savoie, who averaged a 73.75 last season, and junior Liam Ainsworth, who fired an average of 74.25 in his sophomore campaign. Altogether, the Lions return seven golfers off last season's team that finished second in the 2014 SSC Golf Championships.
Saint Leo was one of seven Sunshine State Conference schools ranked in the GCAA preseason poll. Barry University sits in the top spot with 16 first-place votes, while Nova Southeastern picked up one first-place vote and checked in third in the ranking. Lynn University is tabbed fifth, while Florida Tech and Florida Southern were tied in the 14th spot. Rollins College rounded out the poll in the 25th position.
The Lions open their 2014-15 season on Monday, Sept. 22, at the Saint Leo Invitational at the Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club.
