Lions Ranked No. 24 in Golf World/Nike Golf Division II Coaches’ Poll

Saint Leo one of seven Sunshine State Conference Teams in the top 25 or getting votes 

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The latest Golf World/Nike Golf Division II College Coaches' Poll of the spring 2014 season has been released, and the Saint Leo men's golf team finds itself moving into the top-25, sitting at No. 24, after receiving votes in the previous poll. The poll combines the resources of Golf World magazine, Nike Golf and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). The complete results, including results from Divisions I, III, NAIA and NJCAA will appear in the April 21, 2014 issue of Golf World and are live online now. Click here to view the poll.   

The Sunshine State Conference, the top Division II men's golf conference in the country, boasts seven schools either in the top 25 or getting votes. This includes two of the top three teams and three representatives in the top six spots. 

The Lions received 36 votes, nine votes behind No. 23 Sonoma State. 

Fellow Sunshine State Conference foes Barry (No. 1) and Lynn (No. 3) continue to maintain a presence in the top three spots this week. The Buccaneers, the defending NCAA Division II national champions, earned all 16 available first-place votes, and the Fighting Knights drop to third after being ranked No. 2 in the previous poll. 

Rounding out the top five are: USC-Aiken (No. 2), California State-Monterey Bay (No. 4) and Chico State No. 5). 

Nova Southeastern is the only other SSC school ranked in the top 10, slotted at No. 6, while Florida Tech and Florida Southern round out the SSC member institutions in the top 20 ranked No. 16 and No. 19, respectively. 

Rollins received 22 votes in the poll. 

Most recently, Saint Leo finished second at the Sunshine State Conference Championships held at Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club in Dade City, Fla., April 13-15. The Lions turned in a three-round total of 863 (284-285-294), eight strokes ahead of No. 3 ranked Lynn, and second only to top-ranked Barry. 

Saint Leo will now wait on an invitation to the NCAA South/Southeast Regional, May 5-7, at the Savannah Quarters Golf and Country Club in Savannah, Ga.
