Savoie finishes 3rd in two-day event
SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University men's golf team shot a three-round total of 858 (282-286-290) to finish in fourth place at the Buccaneer Invitational at the Normandy Shores Golf Club in Miami Shores, Fla.
The Lions, who came into the final day of competition in second place, finished just one stroke behind third place Nova Southeastern who shot a 857 (283-289-285), and five strokes behind second place Johnson & Wales who shot a 853 (282-289-282). The host – and No. 1 ranked team in the nation – Barry won the title shooting a two day total of 831 (283-270-278).
The Buccaneers welcomed 15 teams, including four others ranked in the top 20 and three receiving votes in the GolfWorld/Nike Golf college coaches poll.
In addition to top-ranked Barry, this year's field included No. 4 Chico State, No. 8 Nova Southeastern, No. 17 Florida Tech and No. 20 St. Edward's. Saint Leo, Valdosta State and Wilmington (Del.) each received votes in this week's national poll.
Joey Savoie paced the way for the Lions finishing in third place shooting a three-round total of 207 (69-69-69). Ryan Gendron shot a 215 (71-71-73) and Trevor Joseph shot a 216 (73-70-73) to finish tied for 14th and tied for 19th, respectively.
Chico State rounded out the top five schools shooting a three-round total of 862 (282-294-286).
Saint Leo will get back to action on April 13-15 when it takes part in the Sunshine State Conference championships at Lake Jovita Country Club.
