Saint Leo sits in 2nd place after two rounds while Savoie is tied for 2nd
SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University men's golf team turned in a solid first day at the Buccaneer Invitational at the Normandy Shores Golf Club in Miami Shores, Fla. The Lions recorded a two-round total of 568 (282-286) and find themselves in second place behind host institution Barry University – the No. 1 ranked team in NCAA Division II – who shot a 553 (283-270) after the first day of competition. Five team's find themselves behind Saint Leo and within eight shots of second place.
The Buccaneers welcome 15 teams, including four others ranked in the top 20 and three receiving votes in the GolfWorld/Nike Golf college coaches poll.
In addition to top-ranked Barry, this year's field includes No. 4 Chico State, No. 8 Nova Southeastern, No. 17 Florida Tech and No. 20 St. Edward's. Saint Leo, Valdosta State and Wilmington (Del.) each received votes in this week's national poll.
The Lions' Joey Savoie finished the day tied for second with a two-round total of 138 (69-69), joining Alistair Docherty (67-71) of Chico State.
Chaz Heinz rounds out the Lions' competitors tied for 64th after shooting 155 (71-84).
Tuesday's final round should be interesting with Johnson & Wales right behind the Lions in third place shooting a 571 (282-289), and Nova Southeastern is in fourth after carding a two round total of 572 (283-289).
Florida Tech (282-294), Chico State (282-294) and St. Edward's (288-288) are all tied for fifth after shooting a one day total of 576.
The tournament's final round tee times are scheduled for Tuesday, April 1 at 7:15 a.m.
